St Patrick’s Day Special by JJ Toner

Summary Ben Jordan has spent three years trying to put “Bonecrusher” Lafferty behind bars. But on the eve of the trial the case falls apart. His key witness is murdered, and Jordan is in the frame. In trying to find the truth he becomes embroiled in a plot beyond his comprehension. And when he’s told his daughter has been kidnapped, he realizes there is more at stake than just his name.

Review Those familiar with Inspector Rebus may see Jordan as an Irish nod to the Scottish detective. Apart from their similar flaws, Jordan’s nemesis is crime boss Lafferty (as opposed to Rebus’s Cafferty). But this faster paced story very much revolves around Jordan, his current dilemma and Dublin’s gritty underworld. The plot was sometimes confusing, and there were a couple of cliché’s, but it was entertaining and kept you guessing.

★★

Why you’ll like it It’s a page turner, there’s no clear cut between the good and the bad guys, and the location and politics kept it fresh.

Why you won’t  I think it suffers a bit from the Rebus comparison, and Lafferty as a bad guy isn’t in the same league as Cafferty.
